Polar's Surgery

Day 1:

I dropped her off at 8 and picked her up at 5. The dr. said she did great. She will be returning in 10 days for her staples to be removed. They, once again, reminded me how sweet Polar is (note to self: reread this when she is having a bad day). She wagged her tail when we picked her up which was a good sign. She did okay on the ride home jumping in a seat in our minivan.

At home she growled at everyone even when being told she was a good girl. She shook some while laying in the floor and whimpered. She wants no water and no food. Hope we have made the right decision.

Day 2:

She has been doing okay today. Mostly sleeping or lounging.

I got her to eat some yogurt water and some cottage cheese. She has slept on the sofa and manages to get on and off herself. She has been able to relieve herself outside just fine. She puts pressure on her leg to balance herself while squatting. She insists on being in the room where the most action is going on...so today it is the computer room. I am glad to see her want to be around us.

Day 8:

Oh my gosh what a difference a week makes. For the 1st time since surgery Polar has been really happy. She ate breakfast and dinner. She still whimpers in pain when she sits down wrong. She breathes loud inhaled noises through her nose as she puts pressure on her leg or hip. She still won't come upstairs but I won't pressure her. Seeing her happy is such a relief. This dog just wants to be left alone during her first week of recovery. Now she is starting to get back to normal.

Day 18

Closes day to normal yet. As far as attitude! She has stopped growling and follows us around the house all the time. She loves being outside and giving kisses. She chased a truck from behind the fence the other day but quickly remembered she isn't so sure footed. Her appetite has returned to normal. As far as her leg--99% of the time she holds her leg up or limps on her knuckles. I had started to walk her but her hip swelled up like an orange. She allowed us to ice it with frozen peas. We will try again next week.
